Diamonds are the hardest natural materials in the world, but an international research team has found that diamonds are elastic on the nanometer scale and can be bent and deformed like an eraser. The researchers developed diamond nanoneedles by chemical vapor deposition and etching. It was found that a diamond "needle" shaped like a toothbrush head but only a few hundred nanometers has an elastic tensile strain of up to 9%. In contrast, bulk natural diamonds have elastic tensile strains well below 1% before fracture failure.

Dao Ming, director of the Nano Mechanics Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a senior author of the paper, said that the external force is unloaded within the strain limit of the diamond needle, and the deformation can be completely reversed and restored.

Lu Yang, a co-author of the paper and an associate professor of mechanics and biomedical engineering at the City University of Hong Kong, said they used a unique nanomechanical method to precisely control and quantify the excessive tensile strain of nanodiamond samples. “This work shows that what is impossible on a macro scale can be achieved at the nanoscale.”
