Eucalyptus, commonly known as Money榕 in some regions, belongs to the eucalyptus family. Among various bonsai species, eucalyptus bonsai is considered one of the easier types to cultivate, making it a popular choice for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts.
Eucalyptus trees are sun-loving plants that thrive in well-ventilated and bright environments. They require a certain level of humidity to grow healthy. If they don’t get enough sunlight, poor air circulation, or insufficient humidity, their leaves may turn yellow and dry out, leading to pests and diseases that can eventually kill the plant. Therefore, it's not advisable to keep them indoors for long periods, especially during the hot growing season. Instead, they should be moved outdoors to a sunny spot to maintain their vitality. When kept indoors, place them in areas where they can receive plenty of natural light and good airflow to support their growth.

Eucalyptus prefers acidic soil and is not cold-tolerant. It cannot survive temperatures below freezing, so it should be brought indoors during winter for proper care. Watering is one of the most critical aspects of bonsai maintenance, and it must be done regularly and carefully.
When planting eucalyptus in a pot, whether it’s deep or shallow, prolonged drought can cause the plant to wither. Therefore, it's important to monitor the soil moisture and water accordingly. However, overwatering can be just as harmful, especially indoors where evaporation is slower. Excess water can lead to root rot due to lack of oxygen in the soil. The watering frequency should vary depending on the season and temperature. In summer, it’s best to water twice a day—once in the morning and once in the evening. During spring and autumn, watering every day or every other day is usually sufficient. In early spring, when new growth begins, you can also water twice daily. During rainy seasons or on rainy days, avoid watering and ensure proper drainage. Sandy soils may need more frequent watering, while clay soils should be watered less often.
Watering can be done either by spraying the foliage or directly watering the roots. Combining both methods is generally recommended. Leaf misting helps keep the leaves fresh and enhances photosynthesis. However, excessive misting can promote leaf elongation and reduce the ornamental value of the plant. Root watering should be thorough, avoiding the common mistake of "half-watering," which leaves the top layer wet while the inside remains dry. This issue, if repeated frequently during the growing season, can ultimately harm or even kill the plant.
