Philippine ebony, which is native to the Philippines, is known for its small tree stature. Its timber features loose pore structures, with growth rings that are difficult to distinguish. The heartwood typically exhibits shades of black, sometimes with streaks of chestnut brown. Under a magnifying glass, you can see tubular pores containing black or dark brown gums. The pore diameters can reach up to 182 micrometers, averaging around 98 micrometers, with a count ranging from 2 to 8 per square millimeter. The axial parenchyma shows mostly concentric ring-like patterns and narrow lines (often just one cell wide), densely packed but not easily noticeable without magnification. Wave-like grain patterns are absent, and the ray cells primarily occur as solitary columns, with paired columns being rare. The wood has a polished appearance, with no distinctive smell or taste. It boasts an extremely fine grain structure and a texture that’s usually straight but slightly interlocked. The wood exhibits moderate shrinkage during drying, making it somewhat challenging to work with. It's considered a heavy wood, with an air-dry density ranging from 0.78 to 1.09 g/cm³. Due to its density and durability, it’s often used for high-quality furniture, musical instruments, and other fine woodworking projects. Despite its strength, it remains relatively unknown outside of specialized woodworking circles, partly because of its limited distribution in the Philippines.
