Renewable energy sources such as solar power and shallow geothermal energy, along with existing infrastructure for their use, are being leveraged to establish national new energy demonstration cities. These initiatives will prioritize projects that align with national policies and meet model criteria. The goal is to promote sustainable urban development through the efficient and widespread use of clean energy.
New energy demonstration cities are urban areas that fully integrate local renewable resources like solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass energy into their overall energy systems. This approach aims to significantly increase the share or scale of renewable energy in total energy consumption. The National Energy Administration officially launched this initiative in May 2012, with plans during the "12th Five-Year Plan" period to develop 100 such cities nationwide. Provincial energy departments are working together to submit unified reports on these developments.
In Anhui Province, the Energy Bureau has been actively guiding the preparation of new energy demonstration city plans, taking into account the province’s specific conditions. Cities like Wuhu and Hefei have submitted detailed development strategies. Looking ahead, the bureau will continue to support Wuhu’s efforts in building a new energy model city by promoting diverse and comprehensive use of biomass energy within urban areas.
By 2015, the target is to ensure that more than 6.5% of urban energy consumption comes from renewable sources, setting a benchmark for the nationwide development of new energy demonstration cities. This progress not only supports environmental sustainability but also encourages innovation and investment in green technologies, paving the way for a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
