DIFFERENT TYPES OF EQUIPMENT THAT ARE USED TO LIFT STEEL PLATES

Many industrial environments that rely on steel sheets for their operations often require specialized equipment to move these sheets efficiently from one place to another. While it might be possible to handle this manually with a team of workers, this method poses significant risks and safety concerns. Employers would also need to spend extra money on protective gear for employees. Certain steel sheets are large and need support on both sides during transport, making the process more efficient when manual labor is replaced with lifting devices.

Three common tools used to lift steel sheets are plate clamps, plate hooks, and magnets. Plate clamps come in three main designs for vertical, horizontal, and specific lifts. They are typically used in pairs and often paired with a spreader beam, which distributes the load evenly and ensures the clamps are spaced properly. Each clamp type has different features, such as hinged designs, heavy-duty options, high-grip versions, and non-marking models with leather pads to avoid scratching the sheets during transport. Plate clamps can also rotate steel sheets by 90 or even 180 degrees, allowing for both vertical and horizontal placement.

Lifting hooks, or lifting dogs, include grab hooks, end dogs, flat plate dogs, and round section dogs. These hooks are useful for lifting multiple steel sheets and can be customized depending on the thickness of the load. Lifting dogs provide a cost-effective, non-marking way to move several sheets at once.

As the name suggests, lifting magnets operate by holding steel sheets with a powerful magnetic force. However, for them to function correctly, the load must possess magnetic properties. For instance, mild steel has magnetic qualities, so sheets made of mild steel can be lifted easily with magnets. They can also lift other metal items like tubes, pipes, and cylinders. Before using a lifting magnet, operators should perform a test to confirm it has enough strength to lift the intended load. This precaution is necessary because air gaps caused by oil, paint, debris, or poor machining can reduce the contact area between the load and the magnet.

In addition to the above, there are other factors to consider when selecting the right lifting device. The environment in which the steel sheets are being moved plays a crucial role. For instance, in wet or oily conditions, non-marking clamps and magnets are preferred to avoid slippage. Furthermore, regular maintenance of these devices is essential to ensure they remain effective and safe to use. Over time, wear and tear can affect their performance, so periodic checks and replacements are necessary to maintain operational efficiency.

Overall, choosing the appropriate lifting tool depends on the specific requirements of the operation. Whether it's a single sheet or multiple sheets, the right equipment ensures safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards. Investing in quality lifting devices not only protects workers but also reduces downtime and potential repair costs, making it a wise business decision.
