Ning Hongtao, president of the Plastics Recycling Committee under the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, spoke at the Chinaplas Green Forum 2014, highlighting that China remains the world's largest importer of waste plastics. He noted that domestic recycling and utilization of waste plastics are on the rise, reflecting growing environmental awareness and policy support.
He pointed out that the implementation of the "hedge action" last year led to a decrease in waste plastic consumption by about 1 million tons, which was slightly less than anticipated. While some large companies have reduced their imports or shifted to other sectors, the number of new applications for waste plastic import licenses has been increasing steadily. Currently, over 3,000 registered enterprises are involved in importing and processing waste plastics in China.
The total number of companies engaged in waste plastic processing across the country exceeds 10,000, indicating a broad industry presence. However, the proportion of imported waste plastics in the total recycled volume is relatively small. According to data from the special committee, in 2013, China recycled a total of 24.9 million tons of plastics, of which 7.9 million tons were imported—accounting for just over 30%.
This shows that while China relies on imports, the majority of waste plastics come from within the country. The industry continues to evolve, with increased efforts toward sustainable practices and improved recycling technologies. As demand for recycled materials grows, the sector is expected to play an even more significant role in China’s circular economy.
