When it comes to the storage of SKF bearings, especially those with seals made from natural or synthetic rubber materials, maintaining proper hygiene and storage conditions is essential. These guidelines are based on international standards such as ISO 2230:1973 and DIN 7716, and also include the recommendations from DIN 9088 for aviation applications.
For long-term storage, the requirements outlined in DIN 7716 must be strictly followed. This includes proper storage equipment, environmental control, and handling procedures. For short-term storage—such as during production or delivery within six months—similar principles apply, although some flexibility may exist regarding temperature and location. However, the appearance and performance of the bearing should not be compromised.
Improper storage conditions can lead to significant degradation of the physical properties of rubber-based seals. Factors such as oxygen, ozone, heat, light, moisture, and exposure to solvents can cause the material to harden, soften, deform permanently, crack, or lose its integrity over time. Additionally, improper loading or stress during storage can accelerate this deterioration.
However, when stored under appropriate conditions, elastomeric seals can maintain their original properties for several years. This is crucial for ensuring the longevity and reliability of SKF bearings in various applications.
Proper storage not only preserves the mechanical function of the bearing but also contributes to better overall machine performance. It helps prevent premature failure and ensures that the bearing remains in optimal condition for use.
