At the "2014 China Urbanization Opportunity High-end Forum," Zou Chuansheng, president of the China Stone Association, highlighted three major trends that the country’s stone industry is expected to undergo in the coming years. These include industrial transformation, relocation, and upgrading, all of which are essential for the sector to adapt and grow in a changing economic landscape.
Zou pointed out that Chinese stone processing companies have traditionally focused on export and investment markets, with the domestic consumer market not yet playing a central role. However, he emphasized that this is set to change. In the future, the export, investment, and consumer markets will hold equal importance. With an estimated 10 million home renovation projects taking place annually in China, the demand for stone products is expected to rise significantly. As more people own homes, the need for decorative and construction materials like stone will continue to expand, offering new opportunities for the industry.
Another key trend identified by Zou is industrial transfer. Currently, many of China's stone resources are imported through regions like Guangdong and Fujian, where they are processed before being distributed. The main consumption areas are still concentrated along the southeastern coast. However, Zou believes that in the future, the industry will shift towards the western and northern parts of the country, closer to the main consumer markets. This move is expected to reduce logistics costs and improve efficiency.
The third trend is industrial upgrading. Zou noted that China has become a global leader in stone production, export, and consumption. To maintain this position, the industry must embrace technological advancements and innovations in product design, management, and marketing. Emphasis should also be placed on resource conservation and clean production methods to ensure sustainable development.
The forum, organized jointly by the China Stone Association and the China Huanghua Port International Stone Trade City, brought together industry leaders to discuss these critical developments and explore ways to enhance the competitiveness of China’s stone sector in the global market.
