NEC Corporation has recently introduced a groundbreaking technology that enables remote and direct control of multiple stationary batteries as well as pure electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This system allows for individual charge and discharge management of each battery, marking what is believed to be the world’s first such solution. As renewable energy sources like solar and wind become more prevalent, electricity generation becomes increasingly unpredictable due to weather fluctuations. This creates rapid shifts in the balance between power supply and demand. By leveraging this new technology, utilities can now manage electricity consumption in real time, ensuring stability even during these sudden changes.
The core of NEC's innovation lies in its ability to synchronize multiple batteries into a unified system that dynamically adjusts power supply and demand. This is achieved through two key components: “adaptive control software†and a “staged cooperative control system.†The adaptive control software manages the status of each battery from the network level, assigning optimal charging and discharging tasks. Meanwhile, the staged cooperative control system enables remote coordination across the network, allowing for precise adjustments every ten minutes.
On the battery side, each unit runs its own local control software, which monitors the grid in real time and makes second-by-second decisions on when to charge or discharge. This combination of centralized and decentralized control ensures that the entire system remains responsive and efficient, regardless of how many batteries are involved.
By enabling seamless coordination among multiple distributed batteries, this technology allows for continuous and optimized charging and discharging cycles. This is particularly important for integrating renewable energy sources into the grid, as it helps maintain a stable and reliable power supply. Traditionally, managing a fleet of dispersed storage systems has been challenging due to the need for perfect synchronization. However, NEC’s approach overcomes this limitation, making large-scale energy storage more practical and effective. With this advancement, the path toward a smarter, more sustainable energy future is becoming clearer.
