How should China's cable enterprises change the status quo?

In today's global market, one of the major challenges for China's cable companies is that their cables are unable to enter international markets. Additionally, high-quality cables produced domestically often end up being labeled as "non-standard" when exported, leading to rejection or even being sent back. This situation raises an important question: why do Chinese cables face such difficulties when they go abroad? According to a recent survey, the core issue lies in the standards. The term "non-standard" typically means that products don’t meet the required specifications of foreign markets. To successfully export, Chinese cable manufacturers must first align with international standards. For instance, if a Chinese cable wants to enter the U.S., it must pass UL certification, while European markets require compliance with EU regulations. Moreover, the EU frequently updates its standards every two years, creating constant challenges for foreign manufacturers who must continuously adapt. This recurring problem highlights a key weakness among Chinese cable companies: a lack of capability and awareness in setting global standards. If Chinese manufacturers could take the lead in developing these standards, they would avoid the "non-standard" label and prevent their products from being rejected overseas. This issue isn't limited to the cable industry alone—it also affects advanced downstream sectors like wind power, photovoltaic composites, and smart grids. A recent incident that sparked widespread discussion in the domestic cable industry involved U.S. General Electric and the Shanghai Cable Research Institute collaborating to develop standards for aluminum alloy cables. Once established, these standards could dominate the U.S. and global markets. Clearly, standards are not just guidelines—they are strategic tools that can determine market access. When standards are set by others, domestic products risk being excluded, undermining fair competition. Standards play a crucial role in international trade, and Chinese cable companies must recognize this. Large manufacturers, in particular, should take inspiration from global leaders and actively participate in shaping industry standards. By doing so, they can gain a competitive edge, control the direction of development, and shift from following others to leading the market. Once Chinese cable companies secure the right to set international standards, they can effectively limit foreign competitors and reshape the long-standing dynamic of imitation. Furthermore, this strategic move can create protective barriers for domestic trade, reduce the competitiveness of foreign firms, and ultimately safeguard the interests of Chinese manufacturers on the global stage.
