Furniture can be replaced with older pieces, and this concept is making a comeback. Recently, Yitong International Home announced a "trade-in" campaign, bringing back a topic that has been in the spotlight for the past two years. It all started in early 2012 when both the Ministry of Commerce and the Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce expressed interest in promoting a furniture "trade-in" policy. At the time, major furniture retailers rushed to introduce similar programs, hoping to boost sales. However, since no official policy was rolled out, the campaigns eventually faded away.
Now, two years later, the news that Yitong International Home will launch a "trade-in" initiative has sparked curiosity. Is this just a marketing stunt, or could it mark a real shift in how consumers approach furniture ownership?
Unlike the previous "trade-in" trend, which focused on replacing old furniture with new ones, Yitong's program emphasizes "furniture preservation." According to a company representative, "The high-end solid wood furniture we sell has significant value retention potential." As a nationwide chain with 781 stores, Yitong promises to honor its "trade-in" commitment, with the terms clearly outlined in contracts. The company hopes this initiative will better meet consumer needs for upgrading their furniture over time.
Two years ago, the initial "trade-in" efforts resembled the appliance trade-in model, where customers could return old furniture for a discount on new purchases. While this approach seemed appealing, it proved unsustainable due to rising costs related to recycling, storage, reconditioning, and disposal.
According to Yitong's officials, this latest "trade-in" campaign is not intended as a long-term strategy. It will only be available to customers who make purchases during specific promotional periods. Industry experts suggest that without government support or financial incentives, large-scale implementation of furniture trade-ins remains challenging.
