These products encompass microbial pesticides, plant-based pesticides, genetically modified organism (GMO) pesticides, and biological control agents that use natural enemies of pests. One of the key advantages of biological pesticides is their effectiveness in controlling pests and diseases without posing a risk to human and animal health. They are environmentally friendly, leave no harmful residues, and do not disrupt the ecological balance by harming beneficial insects or natural predators. Unlike conventional chemical pesticides, they target specific pests while preserving the ecosystem's integrity. The active ingredients in biological pesticides are often derived from natural sources, which allows them to decompose safely in the environment, supporting sustainable agricultural practices. With advancements in modern biotechnology, scientists can enhance the performance of these pesticides by modifying the microorganisms used in their production and optimizing the fermentation process. Additionally, since they work through multiple mechanisms and components, pests and pathogens find it harder to develop resistance. Despite the growing awareness of environmental issues, China remains the world's largest user of chemical pesticides. However, the adoption of biological pesticides is still limited, highlighting the need for increased research, education, and policy support to promote their wider use in sustainable agriculture.
