Hydrogen-powered fuel cells have the potential to allow drivers to travel long distances and then re-inject fuel, similar to how gas-powered vehicles work today. The problem is that there is no hydrogen infrastructure in most parts of the world, and not much hydrogen can be produced in time. Researchers from the EPFL Renewable Energy Science and Engineering Laboratory (LRESE) have created a device that concentrates solar radiation to produce a larger amount of hydrogen in a given area at a lower cost.
The system uses an enhanced photoelectrochemical system, combined with solar radiation and intelligent thermal management, to convert solar energy into hydrogen with a conversion rate of 17%. The team pointed out that 17% is unprecedented efficiency. The technology created by the team is stable and can handle daily dynamic solar radiation. The device created by the team has a thin layer of water to cool the solar cells and allow the performance of the solar cells to be improved. The heat extracted from the water is transferred to the catalyst, thereby improving the chemical reaction and increasing the hydrogen production.
Initially, LRESE's solar simulator was used. The laboratory-scale test results are promising and can be scaled up and tested outdoors. The outdoor test equipment has a 7-meter diameter parabolic mirror that can concentrate solar radiation 1,000 times and drive the equipment. The team believes that their equipment can run for more than 30,000 hours or nearly four years without replacing parts, and replace parts every four years with an operating life of up to 20 years. The solar concentrator can automatically track the sun. In clear weather, it can produce up to 1 kg of hydrogen per day, enough to drive a hydrogen-powered car for 150 kilometers.
