The new concrete contains no cement and has excellent environmental protection and bendability

With incredible strength, concrete has been widely used in the global construction industry. Unfortunately, the hard side of concrete is the lack of bending resistance. The good news is that researchers at Swinburne University have developed a new type of concrete. Not only does it reduce the carbon footprint (no need to make it with cement), it also has better flexibility.

If the huge weight is evenly distributed on the surface of the concrete column, the material will not be deformed by the naked eye. But if the pressure is concentrated to the center of the pillar, the concrete will bend relatively quickly or even break.

This is because, although concrete has a higher compressive strength, it still leaves a short board with a lower tensile strength. In view of this, in the past few decades, researchers have not stopped improving the tensile properties of concrete.

In addition, in the production process of concrete, cement as a "special glue" that maintains the wet mixture together will cause a lot of pollution.


Ordinary concrete is "hard and easy to break"

This is because the production of cement requires high temperatures, this process consumes a lot of energy and emits huge amounts of greenhouse gases.

Although there are new concretes with better tensile strength, they have not completely abandoned the use of cement.

The research team claims that the main raw material for the new type of concrete it develops is industrial waste such as fly ash (one of the air pollution sources of coal-fired power plants).

And because the polymer composite material of this texture can be cured at room temperature, the manufacturing process will be more environmentally friendly.

Previously, this alternative process was also used for the production of conventional concrete. But now, it has been the main application in bendable concrete products.

Research correspondent Behzad Nematollahi said: "The new concrete production process can reduce energy consumption by about 36%, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 76%."

Laboratory test results show that, while having similar strength, the tensile properties of this new type of concrete are about 400 times that of ordinary concrete.

Even if the new material eventually breaks, the tiny polymeric fibers in the mixture will ensure that they will not break. Instead, the strength continued to be maintained under tension, and multiple small cracks appeared.

Looking to the future, this new type of concrete can be used in areas where earthquakes occur frequently, so that it can withstand conventional vibrations without being found to weaken the structural strength after the earthquake.
