Scientists find "extreme bacteria" or sources of future fuel

In the not-too-distant future, the power of cars, trains and aircraft may be obtained through the use of some extreme bacteria. According to a report in the British "Daily Mail" on February 3, scientists have "unintentionally" discovered a bacterium in extremely high salinity and alkaline conditions that can produce hydrogen. Hydrogen has a very high energy density, three times that of gasoline or diesel, and hydrogen can also be used in fuel cells. The efficiency is said to be twice that of combustion engines.

According to reports, in theory, people can reproduce these conditions in an industrial environment and produce large amounts of hydrogen energy.


According to the British "Daily Mail" report, scientists inadvertently found a bacteria in extreme environments

Melanie Mormile, professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri, USA, discovered the genus of Halanaerobium hydrogeninformans in the city of Zaohu, Washington. This bacterium is called extreme bacteria or extremophile, a microorganism that lives under conditions of extreme temperatures, acidic, alkaline, or chemical concentrations.

When tested, the scientists discovered that the bacteria can produce hydrogen in a highly salinity and high alkaline environment that rivals genetically modified organisms.

This bacteria also produces organic compounds called 1,3-propanediol.

This compound can be used in industrial products such as adhesives, laminates and coatings. This compound is also a solvent and can be used as an antifreeze.

Surviving in this harsh environment, the salt anaerobes are said to have "metabolic ability." Similar harsh conditions can be seen in some of the contaminated abandoned sites.

Hydrogen has a very high energy density, which is three times that of gasoline or diesel, and the byproduct of production is water.

Hydrogen can also be used in fuel cells, and efficiency is said to be twice that of combustion engines. However, hydrogen itself is not a direct energy source, but is a carrier for other types of renewable energy, including the sun, wind and water.
