Good situation leads to healthy development of photovoltaic industry

Yesterday, a reporter learned at the 13th China Photovoltaic Conference that the China Photovoltaic Industry Association is rapidly taking shape. This new organization aims to unite industry interests and manage international relations more effectively. Industry insiders have remarked that "the government gave the photovoltaic sector financial support and now is giving it a structured home." Compared to last year's conference, this year’s event saw a heightened emotional tone from companies and experts. Representatives from multiple ministries also participated, expressing their commitment to supporting the growth of the solar power industry. Peng Hongbing, deputy director of the Electronic Information Department at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, noted that the association is actively working with the Ministry of Civil Affairs and hopes to be officially established soon. “It will serve as the voice of the industry in external communications and carry out specific initiatives,” he said. According to analysts, the formation of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association is expected to play a key role in guiding the industry toward healthy, orderly development. It will also help strengthen collaboration across the supply chain and better address international trade challenges. Notably, the association’s formation comes at a crucial time as the PV sector accelerates its return to the domestic market. In recent years, the Sino-European "double anti-dumping" case was resolved earlier this month. While 94 Chinese solar companies received duty-free export privileges, the 7GW export restrictions have pushed firms to seek new markets and adapt to the domestic environment. However, having an association is just the first step. Peng Hongbing added that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is also working on developing industrial technology standards, systems, and testing institutions to further support the sector. From an industry perspective, returning to the domestic market isn’t without its challenges. Shi Lishan, deputy director of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Division at the National Energy Administration, pointed out that high costs remain a major constraint for the development of solar power in China. Compared to traditional energy sources, the cost of photovoltaic power generation is more than twice as high. “Although recent policy adjustments have increased electricity price subsidies and addressed some core issues, any industry reliant on subsidies is still vulnerable,” Shi Lishan said. “Only through technological innovation and improved market competitiveness can the industry achieve sustainable growth.” Zheng Fangneng, director of the Department of Energy and Energy at the Ministry of Science and Technology, emphasized that the ministry will continue to prioritize photovoltaics in its research and development efforts. “We will work closely with other departments to develop policies and measures that promote the industry’s long-term health and stability,” he said.
