Celery "double rot" disease primarily refers to heart rot and black rot, two common ailments that significantly impact the growth and yield of celery crops. Heart rot mainly affects the growing tip of the leaves, causing them to turn dark green, dry, and eventually rot. Black rot, on the other hand, attacks the roots and stems, leading to severe damage and even plant death.
According to the China Pesticide Network, these diseases can cause substantial losses for farmers if not managed properly. The causes of heart rot are often related to calcium and boron deficiencies in the soil, or prolonged periods of cloudy weather. After heavy rain followed by dry conditions, the roots struggle to absorb essential nutrients, worsening the condition.
Black rot typically begins at the base of the plant and may spread to the roots. Initially, the affected areas appear grayish-brown, later turning dark green or dark brown. The outer layer of the tissue remains intact at first, but as the disease progresses, the inner tissues become black and soft. Affected leaves droop and wilt, and in severe cases, the outer leaves decay and fall off, leading to the entire plant dying.
To prevent and manage these diseases, early intervention is crucial. At the initial stage, a mixture of 25% metalaxyl wettable powder diluted at 1000 times, combined with Jingbo calcium at 800 times and boron fertilizer at 1000 times, can be effective. Alternatively, 25% pyraclostrobin at 2000 times, mixed with agricultural vigor at 750 times, or oxazolone at 1500 times with full garden green leaf fertilizer at 1000 times, can also help control the spread.
Once symptoms are evident, it is recommended to use 25% metalaxyl wettable powder at 600 times, along with 70% thiophanate at 600 times and Jingbo calcium. Another option is 25% pyraclostrobin mixed with 64% mancozeb at 1000 times, plus 750 times agricultural vigor. Spraying should be done every 3–5 days, with 2–3 applications needed to fully control the disease.
Proper irrigation, balanced fertilization, and regular monitoring are also essential in preventing these diseases. Farmers are advised to maintain good drainage and avoid overwatering, especially during rainy seasons. By taking proactive measures, they can reduce the risk of crop failure and ensure healthier celery plants.
