Chlorfenapyr is a pesticide that must be used strictly according to the following guidelines. Proper application not only enhances its effectiveness but also reduces unnecessary delays in pest control.
1. During the treatment period, timing is crucial—especially during the early larval stage of insects. The older the insect, the higher the required dose and the less effective the treatment. For controlling the golden moth, the best time to apply chlorfenapyr is during the overwintering adult stage or the first to second generation larvae. Wait until leaf miners, leaf curlers, and fruit worms have entered leaves, burrowed into fruits, or formed protective cases before spraying. Spraying at this point may reduce effectiveness, and overlapping generations can make control more challenging. Always "medicate and eat" the pests, rather than just "seeing them."
2. When mixing with other agents, avoid alkaline substances. Chlorfenapyr works best when mixed with acidic or neutral solutions, as it does not lose efficacy. However, some combinations may lead to cross-resistance or even negative resistance. Plant synergists can enhance or inhibit resistance. Adding 300 times diluted urea solution can reduce droplet size and decrease evaporation by 25%–33%.
3. Be cautious about "cheating" in formulations. Since chlorfenapyr is not a fast-acting insecticide and has limited contact activity, its effects take 3–5 days to manifest. Some farmers may mistakenly believe it’s ineffective. Some manufacturers mix it with fast-acting insecticides, which undermines its long-term benefits. These deceptive combinations should be avoided.
4. Focus on "even" coverage. Chlorfenapyr works by inhibiting chitin synthesis in the insect’s epidermis, preventing them from shedding their skin. It primarily acts through ingestion and can penetrate eggs and the insect's outer layer, but it lacks systemic action. Therefore, thorough coverage is essential. For example, golden moth eggs are laid on the underside of leaves, and larvae enter from there. If the spray doesn’t reach the underside, control will be poor. Spraying on the underside of leaves helps kill newly laid eggs and unhatched ones. Even coverage is key for maximum effectiveness.
5. Pay attention to "quasi" concentration. Although chlorfenapyr is highly effective and safe, it is poorly soluble in water and most organic solvents, making it difficult to formulate into emulsifiable concentrates. Most commercial products are suspensions. Before use, shake the bottle, dilute with a small amount of water first, then add more water to reach the desired concentration. Too high a concentration or large droplets may repel pests. For the 25% suspension, a 1500-fold dilution is typically recommended.
6. Safety is critical. Chlorfenapyr has low toxicity (LD50 > 40,000 mg/kg in rats), compared to other insecticides like diflubenzuron (3,640 mg/kg) and flufenazone (3,000 mg/kg). Its toxicity is significantly lower than many alternatives. The US Cyanamide Company recommends a 70-day interval between application and harvest. As a result, chlorfenapyr is considered one of the safest options for green food production. It degrades quickly in the environment, does not accumulate in the body, and is harmless to mammals, birds, fish, and bees. It remains effective for over 30 days and is rain-resistant. Always prioritize human and environmental safety when using it.
7. A warning: The China Pesticide Network reminds users that all chlorpyrifos-based pesticides are harmful to aquatic organisms such as shrimp and crabs, as well as silkworms. Avoid using these products near water bodies or in areas where silkworms are raised.
