Researchers have developed "almost instantaneous" MIM diodes

Silicon-based computers can move electronics quickly, but researchers hope to increase speed faster. A team at Oregon State University has worked in this area for many years. Nowadays, a new kind of electronic product has been able to transmit electrons "almost instantaneously". They said that this research means that it may be possible to create "extremely high-speed" computers and will bring improvements to mobile phones, televisions, displays, and a wider range of microelectronic devices.

The research team has demonstrated the latest results of this technology - a diode called "MIM" - which is said to better control the movement of electrons. The function of the MIM diode is achieved by an insulating material sandwiched between two pieces of metal, and quantum tunneling efficiency is high.

Researchers at Oregon State University have converted their simple "metal-insulator-metal" structure into MIM diodes and added another insulator to this "sandwich." Research co-author John Conley said, "This advancement will enhance the operational performance of the equipment."

Oregon State University also said that the team created this high-performance MIM diode three years ago and believes it will be the next big leap forward - "Real-time applications are a step closer to us."
