With the combination of suction cups and Shower hoses, robot researchers have created a flexible wall-climbing robot that is said to be inspired by congenital sucker animal leeches in nature. The robot called LEeCH can climb vertical surfaces in any direction and can climb from one side of the wall to the other. Researchers call it a major achievement for humans to develop soft and flexible robots because it can move freely on the wall.
This robot was developed to draw inspiration from leeches. Leeches are excellent climbers, thanks in large part to the two natural suction cups at each end of the body. It is small, soft, and light, and the leech can fall at a relatively high level without damage. It has all the attributes of an ideal wall-climbing robot.
This hose brings many advantages of leech to the main robot design, including lightness and flexibility. And, like a leech, the robot can even stretch the body to a longer distance. It uses a gear to move the hose back and forth. The gear is connected to a groove on the surface of the hose to create a rack and pinion mechanism. The vacuum pump is used to control its suction cup. The researchers said that LEeCH can move completely freely on the vertical plane and can climb to the other side of the wall.
Researchers say the robot can be used for building inspection and maintenance, as well as search and rescue of potential disaster sites. However, the latter requires robots to move on uneven terrain. So far, LEeCH can only move on the plane. At present, researchers are considering filling the hose with liquid to change the stiffness of the robot, and trying to use more professional suction cups and additional muscles to perform more complex tasks.
