On the morning of June 26th, Professor Li Ying, the Deputy Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, delivered a special lecture titled “50 Years of Development in China’s Superhard Materials†in Classroom 31626. The students from the 13th grade were highly attentive throughout the session.
In her lecture, Professor Li first provided an overview of the historical development of the superhard materials industry over the past five decades. She then delved into the characteristics, applications, and synthesis techniques of superhard materials, with a particular focus on diamond. She explained that natural diamonds have long been valued as precious gems, but with scientific advancements, their use has expanded significantly. Today, synthetic diamonds are widely used across various industries, and their production technology has advanced considerably. Different shapes and sizes of diamonds serve different purposes—such as those used in saw blades versus those used in resin grinding wheels.
Professor Li also discussed the various forms of synthetic diamonds and how they are produced under different conditions, such as high temperature and pressure, vacuum environments, and ultra-high temperature and pressure. She highlighted that the global production of synthetic diamonds has surged in recent years, with China accounting for approximately 90% of the world's total output. Moreover, the quality of high-grade synthetic diamonds produced in China has reached world-class standards.
Throughout the lecture, Professor Li engaged the students with interactive discussions about diamond-related topics, sparking lively conversations among the audience. This event not only deepened the students’ understanding of the superhard materials industry but also sparked greater interest in their future studies. It served as a valuable foundation for them to build a solid academic base in their chosen field.
