Then, 2–3 liters of potassium hydroxide solution (750 g/L) were introduced to optimize dispersion. The resulting slurry showed uneven particle size distribution, highlighting the necessity of combining a cement ball mill with a water separator. Fine particles are difficult to separate from coarse ones, so a hydraulic classifier is used to remove larger particles and return them to the ball mill for further grinding. Commonly used separators include the Dow water separator, centrifugal continuous separator, and hydrocyclone. The Dow water separator is a cylindrical device equipped with a feeding tube, a rotating crucible, and an overflow tube. As the slurry flows through, finer particles exit via the overflow, while coarser particles settle at the bottom and are returned to the mill. This process runs continuously. It’s important to note that the maximum particle size in the overflow should not exceed 6 µm, and the overflow rate should be maintained around 0.5 cm/min (at 15–25°C). If the temperature increases, the overflow rate can be slightly adjusted. The titanium dioxide concentration in the overflow is typically between 160–170 g/L.
