As Beijing has recently experienced increased smog and haze, public concern over air pollution has grown. In response, Professor Qiu Song from the Chinese Academy of Fine Arts has developed a unique street lamp that functions like a plant—absorbing and cleaning the air while providing lighting. This design has sparked interest among environmental and lighting experts.
Experts agree that the concept is promising but emphasize that before it can be widely adopted, challenges such as energy efficiency and cost control must be addressed. The integration of purification technology into street lamps could mark a significant step forward in sustainable urban infrastructure.
The Design Concept: Clean Energy Meets Air Purification
Last week, I had the chance to see a prototype of this new street light at the Industrial Design Department of the China Institute of Aesthetics. At first glance, it looks similar to a traditional street light, but its internal structure reveals a revolutionary feature.
This smart street light uses solar panels and wind turbines to generate electricity, eliminating the need for an external power source. As a result, it can be installed anywhere without the constraints of wiring. But the real innovation lies in its built-in air purification system, which mimics the photosynthesis process of plants to clean the surrounding air.
Inspiration from Daily Life and Environmental Concerns
Professor Qiu shared that his inspiration came from everyday experiences. While designing an indoor air purifier, he noticed the worsening air quality in Beijing and wanted to bring similar technology outdoors. He also observed that traditional street lamps are mostly idle except for their lighting function. “Why not turn them into air-cleaning devices?†he asked.
This idea led to the creation of the "Spiritual Streetlight," which won an award at the Third International Art and Science Exhibition in 2012. Since then, it has attracted attention from government officials and companies interested in its potential applications.
Expert Opinions: A Promising but Evolving Idea
Although still in the conceptual stage, Professor Qiu believes the technology is feasible. He pointed out that both clean energy systems and air purification components are already available. However, experts like Professor Zhang Pengyi from Tsinghua University caution that the design needs to be tailored for outdoor pollutants, such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from vehicles.
Liu Shiping, vice chairman of the China Illuminating Engineering Society, agrees that the idea is innovative but notes that technical and economic challenges remain. Once these issues are resolved, the design could become a valuable addition to city infrastructure.
