Nitrocellulose, also known as cellulose nitrate, is a white or yellowish fibrous material that dissolves in acetone. It is a polymer with a high molecular weight, and its chemical formula can be represented as C6H7O2(ONO2)a(OH)3-an, where 'a' refers to the degree of esterification and 'n' represents the degree of polymerization. The level of nitrification is typically indicated by the percentage of nitrogen content. Nitrocellulose is highly flammable and potentially explosive. The risk level increases with higher nitrogen content. When the nitrogen content exceeds 12.5%, it becomes extremely hazardous and can ignite easily in the presence of fire. Moreover, if the temperature rises above 40°C, it may decompose more rapidly and even cause spontaneous combustion. On the Other hand, nitrocellulose with a nitrogen content below 12.5% is relatively more stable. However, it can still degrade over time when exposed to heat or stored for extended periods. This degradation may lead to the release of acidic compounds, which lowers the material’s ignition point and increases the risk of spontaneous combustion. Therefore, proper storage conditions and handling are essential to ensure safety.
